Energy Saving Tips
Here are some quick win tips that can make a real difference:
- Turn your room thermostat down by 1°C. This could cut your heating bills by up to
10%.
- Close internal doors behind you to prevent draughts.
- Do not leave appliances such as televisions, video recorder, Computers or music systems
on standby. Switch off at the mains if possible.
- Do not brush your teeth under a running tap; use a mug or cup.
- Do not leave lights on in unoccupied rooms. Turn off the light when you have left
a room.
- Do not leave mobile phone or MP3 chargers on after they have fully charged up. Unplug
the charger or switch off at the mains.
- Draw your curtains at nighttime to stop heat escaping through the windows and open
them again in the morning to allow light back into the room.
- Do not leave the fridge door open for too long.
- Defrost your fridge and freezer compartments on a regular basis.
- Always use a full-load in your washing machine or an economy setting if you need
to use a half-load.
- Wash most of your clothes at 30°C
- Dry out your clothes on a washing line whenever possible
- Have a shower instead of a bath. This uses a lot less water than a bath.
- Insulate your hot water pipes to prevent heat loss.
- Only boil the amount of water you actually need in your kettle.
- Fix Thermostatic Radiator Valves (TRV) onto your central heating radiators where
possible.
- Fill gaps around your doorframes and window frames with a PVC seal to prevent heat
loss.
- Replace light bulbs with energy saving ones. They last up to 12 time longer and use
less energy.
- Get dripping taps fixed. A dripping water tap wastes enough water to fill a bath
in just one day.
- Make sure your loft insulation is at least 200mm.
